What is the relationship between the Way and spirit? We cannot separate these two; there is no point of distinction. Without animating spirit, there is no Way, while the Way is everywhere, for spirit is everywhere.
The Way lives, for spirit lives. So, of the Way, or Tao, Lao Tzu says -
The Way that can be talked about is not the timeless Way. The name that can be named is not the timeless name. The nameless is the beginning of heaven and earth. The named is the mother of all of the phenomena. Ever desireless, one experiences the unseen mystery. Ever desiring, one witnesses its manifestations. These two spring from the same source but differ in name; this appears as darkness [to the mind]. Darkness within darkness. The gate to all mystery.
